The Infection Prevention Working Party (WIP) draws up guidelines for
hospitals, nursing homes, care services for the mentally disabled, home care services, the ambulance sector and residential care services, in addition to a guideline developed specially for
dental practices.
The guidelines are drawn up by at least 2 members of the Working Party with assistance from experts in the specific
fields. The draft guidelines are published on the internet. The draft guidelines are open to comments for four
months. If relevant, the comments are incorporated into a final draft. Once a
year, all guidelines published or revised during that year are presented to the National Health Council for
review. The comments of the National Health Council are incorporated in the next
version of the guideline.
The Health Care Inspectorate (IGZ) considers the Working Party’s guidelines to be professional
standards.
All WIP guidelines are placed on the internet and can be downloaded free of charge.
As of January 1, 2004, the WIP stopped taking orders for paper versions of
guidelines.
The Working Party receives professional support through the documentation
centre. The centre collects scientific information in the area of infection
prevention. This supports the work of the committees. The documentation centre
is responsible for publishing the guidelines on the Internet. The documentation centre also fulfils the role of a question and answer service. Every
year, the Working Party’s hygienist answers hundreds of questions in writing, by telephone and by e-mail. In
addition, the documentation centre functions as an advice and information centre with regard to the prevention of HIV infections in the healthcare services and other social
organisations.
The Documentation Centre is open weekdays (Monday to Friday) from
08:00 to
17:30 hours.
